Brendan (Buck) is a proud Aboriginal man from Cape Barren Island continuing the cultural practice of muttonbirding, Mutton birding is a practice that has been handed down for generations. Every year, Buck gets the calling to go ‘birdin’ and head out to the manuka scrub to cut and get his spits ready. Spits are used in the rookeries to carry the muttonbirds which are placed onto the spit and carried across the shoulders.
Our old people travelled to the coastal areas according to the seasons to gather food and trade, as we continue to do today. I go on the same journey each year as Dad and his father did, following in their footsteps, as do my sons. Birdin is a special time for us where we catch up with family and community to gather food. Our culture continues on……………
