Dean was born at Whitemark on Flinders Island in 1967. Moving to Launceston in 1972, he continued to return to the island each year going fishing with his Father, Grandfather and extended family, gaining a clear understanding of seamanship, shipwright skills and respect for marine country. This first-hand knowledge about life at sea that forms an important part of his family heritage. Perhaps his earliest creative influences came from his grandparents but more specifically his cousin leigh. “Leigh never rested, if he was in his room he drew consistently, built and painted models of all sorts or read, if he was outside, he was manufacturing amazing play sets and props from apple and fishing containers as well as myriad of found objects”
