Nayri Niara is an Aboriginal owned Social Enterprise located at The LongHouse in nipaluna/Hobart, lutruwita/Tasmania.
For more than two decades, Ruth Langford, Nayri Niaraโ€™s founder, has drawn on the knowledge passed on by her Yorta Yorta mother, the lutrawita/Tasmanian Aboriginal community where she was born, and national and international Indigenous connections to heal lives, rebuild Indigenous cultural knowledge and build new futures within and beyond the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. Ruth founded the bi-annual Nayri Niara Good Spirit Festival in 2017, the Indigenous social enterprise Nayri Niara, and established The Longhouse, a meeting-place in Hobart where Indigenous cultural knowledge and WellBeing practices are explored and shared with community.

Nayri Niaraโ€™s Dream

Nayri Niara is determined to break down cultural barriers, address intergenerational trauma and โ€˜Close the Gapโ€™ for Indigenous people by providing reconnection to First Nations cultural practices for healing, disrupt systemic poverty through Nayri Niaraโ€™s โ€œOur Way Homeโ€ workforce development program, and heal the epidemic of isolation and mental health crisis through providing connection and belonging, recognising that community is vital to this.

The Creation Story of the LongHouse.

In October 2018 the Nayri Niara Good Spirit Family engaged a traditional Indigenous practice of cleansing Country before 'business' could be conducted at the development site of the future LongHouse.

The LongHouse sits on the original intertidal zone where the freshwater of kunanyi/Mt Wellington met the saltwater of timtumili minanya/the Derwent River - a place rich in nutrients, diversity & Indigenous cultural heritage. The artwork and awakening ceremony, created & held by the Indigenous community, symbolises and honours Country, Indigenous history and culture.

Currently the land that the LongHouse resides on is a remediation site being tested and worked on by Macquarie Point. The LongHouse, Nayri Niaraโ€™s residency and the Edible Precinct are the first steps towards creating a community hub, sharing Indigenous knowledge and traditions, and nurturing the repair of Country and relationships.

We are so grateful to all who joined us to call in good spirit and co-create this beautiful natural installation as a way for us to show our deep respect for Country, Culture, Community and the Sacred. It was an important ceremony to clear the space before the next step of developing the LongHouse - Home HEARth of the Nayri Niara family.

The LongHouse awakening ceremony and art installation was a collaboration between an array of local Indigenous community members with special thanks to cultural artists - Kristian Baggenson, Ruth Langford, Allan Mansell and Warren Mason.

Thank you to Elders; Uncle Dougie Mansell, Aunty Wendal Pitchford.

Thank you also to members of the Aboriginal community who came along to share your stories and good will. Extra special thank you to the City of Hobart whoโ€™s staff were truly fantastic with their support. Karadi Aboriginal Corporation, Budget Car Rental (Tasmania), Contemporary Art Tasmania, Australia Council for the Arts and Macquarie Point Development Corporation and Core Collective Architects for their support.

Videographer- Stu Gibson.
